Standing Invitation

City life / An opinion

When did hanging out become a calendar invite?

There is a peculiar amount of organisation involved in doing something unremarkable. Perhaps the answer is to make the occasion smaller.

First there is the suggestion. We should do something. Then there is the question of what, and when, and how far everyone is willing to travel.

Perhaps the invitation doesn’t have to prove that we are interesting. It can simply make a little space for contact.

On company

Beside, not opposite.

Different kinds of company ask different things of us.

Not every kind of company needs a conversation across a table. Some of the easiest time we spend with other people happens side by side: reading in the same room, working on the same garden bed, waiting for the same tile to come round.

Our social atlas considers four of those rhythms, with public Canberra starting points. The photograph illustrates the idea of a shared room; it is not a photograph of an event we hosted or attended.
