Field note

Why read together if nobody is talking?

A field note on reading your own book in the company of other people.

Standing Invitation

Reading in company.

Culture & the things we do together
Two rows of books, nobody obliged to speak.Original typographic design · Standing Invitation

The silent book club format is simple enough to fit in a sentence. People meet, read their own books, and talk afterwards if they want to. The format has an international organisation behind it and, according to the ACT Government’s guide for readers, a presence in Canberra.

What is harder to explain is the appeal. Reading is the most solitary of hobbies. Why take it somewhere public, to sit near strangers who are also not talking?

One answer is that company doesn’t always need conversation. Being in a room with people who chose the same quiet thing can be its own kind of belonging, with a low price of entry: no small talk required, no book to finish by a deadline, nothing to prove about your taste.
